Weight Management at Beaver

Beaver Medical Group Patient Newsletter 2002

Obesity is reaching "epidemic proportions" in the United States, said Surgeon General David Satcher recently, and could soon cause as much preventable disease and death as cigarette smoking.
More than 61 percent of adults and 14 percent of adolescents are affected by obesity and some 300,000 die each year from health problems directly related to obesity, Satcher noted.
He released a call to action to “battle” the condition. This issue of the patient newsletter is dedicated to weight management programs that can help you join the battle against obesity.
Beaver Health Education has lots of resources, classes and information for someone who wants to lose weight! Learn how to shed those pounds the safe and satisfying way by signing up for the Life-Style Class taught by Registered Dietitian Margaret Heath. In this 12 week class you will weigh in weekly, receive a personalized diet plan and new information each week about how to vary your eating habits, enjoy your food and still lose weight. You may also request private, individualized appointments with any of our five registered dietitians.
In the Total Wellness class taught by Dr. Ernie Medina, you will be introduced to ideas about wellness in all areas of your life. You will see real life models of fat and muscle, and learn about body composition with a body fat analysis. Dr. Medina offers numerous options for support and monitoring including: quarterly individual appointments, monthly support groups, "Fast Start" small groups, telephone follow-ups and individual coaching. As you improve your eating and exercising habits you will be delighted, as many folks have been, to drop clothing sizes, gain muscle mass, and increase your energy level.
Kid Fit, taught by Dr.Kim Knowlton, is a fun and active class for kids whose health is effected by obesity, inactivity and poor nutrition habits. Kids learn how to take better care of themselves through games and activities in a positive learning environment. Dr. Knowlton is happy to see kids individually in follow-up and private appointments. Kids taking this class feel better about themselves and learn how to make good choices to improve their health.
Join the growing group of people who want to lose weight and improve how they feel by attending a class or support group that will inform and enlighten you.
