Super Adult CPR Saturday "Super CPR Saturday" participants watched an emergency training video and received a lecture from Diane Vera, Manager of Health & Safety at the American Red Cross. Then everyone was broken up into small groups and rotated through three skills areas in order to practice CPR techniques on mannequins. In all three areas the three Cs were used - Check, Call, and Care - but the care was different for each. A victim who is not breathing but has a pulse required the skill practiced in the first area, rescue breathing. An unconscious victim who has a blockage preventing air from going into the lungs required the second skill, unconscious choking. Finally, a victim who is not breathing and does not have a pulse required the third skill, full CPR. Afterwards, participants completed an Adult CPR test to receive a one-year certification and a skills reference card to take home. Beaver Medical Group is the first to sponsor such an event. I asked Yevette Ramos, Director of Development at the local American Red Cross chapter, to think of a new event that would be beneficial to the community. She came up with Super Adult CPR Saturday to provide free training to the public. The idea was presented to Beaver Medical Groups Community Services Committee, and Beavers physicians quickly approved the funding. Not only did the event give participants skills to save a life, it also served as a fund-raiser for the Inland Empire Chapter of the American Red Cross, said Marianne Baldwin, Director of Marketing for Beaver Medical Group/ EPIC Management, LP. Volunteers and instructors from the American Red Cross along with volunteers from Beaver Medical Group/ EPIC Management and the San Bernardino Adult School helped make the event a success. The volunteer students from the English as a Second Language course at San Bernardino Adult School were also given the opportunity to go through the course who were very proud to complete the course in English and pass the exam for their certification. 200 people called to make reservations for the event, but only half could be accommodated. With so many people left on a waiting list, the Physicians of Beaver Medical Group have already approved the funding support for another "Super Adult CPR Saturday" to be held in June. The event will train 100 people and fits perfectly with the motto of the American Red Cross, "Together, We Can Save a Life."
